HEALTH & SAFETY

UNISON believes health and safety in the workplace is an issue for everyone.

Every year, thousands of people suffer accidents and ill-health at work - most of which could be avoided.

Unions and health and safety laws save and protect lives. But many more could be protected from harm if health and safety laws were better enforced.

We are campaigning for a new way of working, one that guarantees every worker a safe and healthy workplace.

A current EU directive may put many diabetic people at risk of losing their driving licence under certain medical circumstances - October 2011

For more information please click on the link http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=23506

There is also the opportunity to sign an e-petition if you wish to do so. In order to be debated in parliament an e-petition needs 100,000 signatures. This currently has under 2,000 so will need much more support to be effective.

OFFICE MOVE - August 2011

A proposed departmental move, is no longer going ahead. UNISON & Health & Safety intervention promoted a re-measure of available accomodation space,  subsequently this was found to be unsuitable, although further areas may be identified in future.

For information the legal requirement  is a minimum of 11 cubic metres per person, assuming the room is up to three meters high, this is also dependent on layout and "furniture" being accounted for, meaning that the minimum allowance of 11 cubic metres will not comply if the room is full of furniture.

Workplace (H&S & Welfare) Regs 1992 Statutory Instrument:

1992 No. 3004  Regulation 10

Room dimensions and space

10.—(1) Every room where persons work shall have sufficient floor area, height and unoccupied space for purposes of health, safety and welfare.

(2) It shall be sufficient compliance with this regulation in a workplace which is not a new workplace, a modification, an extension and which, immediately before this regulation came into force in respect of it, was subject to the provisions of the Factories Act 1961, if the workplace does not contravene the provisions of Part I of Schedule 1.

If you are faced with an office move where space appears limited please contact UNISON for advice.

Health & Safety is neccessary contrary to some misguided opinions

The true picture of health and safety at work is that between 8,000 and 15,000 deaths are caused each year by occupational cancers. In addition there are around 4,000 deaths from other lung disorders such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema caused by breathing in fumes, chemicals, and dusts. More than 1,000 people are killed while driving on the roads as part of their work. There are also all those who die as a result of cardiovascular disease caused by the nature of their work. This can either be stress (which can more than double your risk), or exposure to certain fumes and chemicals. The lowest estimates for this are 7,500. Using the most conservative estimates at least 20,000 people die prematurely every year because of occupational injury or disease, but the real figure could be closer to 50,000.

In addition, last year there were almost 29,000 reported major injuries to workers and over 105,000 reported injuries causing at least three days off work. However, there is huge underreporting by the employer, so the HSE estimates that the true number for these injuries is almost 250,000. These figures do not include injuries that develop over time or work related diseases. The HSE estimates that there were 551,000 new cases of illness caused by work last year. Many of these become long-term and can remain with the person all their life. In total, 2.1 million people say they suffered from ill-health that they thought was work-related.

Lone Working - Health & Safety Executive Guidance

To our knowledge, Essex Police does not have a lone working policy, but obviously it affects a lot of people, including those who work at home. Please see the below link for further guidance.

emergency exit gate - cabling work (May 2011)

Some cabling work is going on at the Essex Police complex, this involves digging large trenches, however the trench goes across the pathway of an emergency exit gate, this caused concern to our health & safety officer who then raised the issue with the appropriate people.

The 4 photo’s below were taken on 25th May after the matter was brought to the attention of management on 24/05/2011, please also look below for the final 2 photo's.

and the ones below were taken after return from Unison meeting, however as of 26th May this didn't resolve all issues as the bridge ends up at a pile of mud to climb over.

The pictures shown below were taken on Workers Memorial Day 'Don't forget to remember the dead and fight for the living' 28th April 2011, by a local health & safety representative. If you see any similar situations within your workplace please contact your health & safety rep straight away.
